Armed robbers shot dead a security guard and took some P2.5 million cash from a rice mill in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, early Monday, police said.

Chief Insp. Elpidio Duenas, Batangas Provincial Police spokesman, identified the fatality as Jojo Reanzares, guard at the M.A. Reyes Trading rice mill in Brgy. San Jose.

Reanzares was found lying lifeless and bloodied at the rice mill’s guard house after the robbery occurred 5 a.m., Duenas said in a text message.

The robbers entered the establishment by destroying the steel gate’s padlock and glass door, then took the portable vault which contained P2.5 million cash, he said.

Senior Insp. Ricky Dalisay, Sto. Tomas Police deputy chief, said the rice mill’s owner, Maribel Reyes Alcoser, is now coordinating with authorities.

Police have invited the rice mill’s six workers to undergo paraffin examination, he added. (John Roson)
