A junior Army officer got killed in an ambush by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members in Cauayan, Negros Occidental, Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The slain officer was identified as 1Lt. Jose Angelo Esguerra, ex-o of the 47th Infantry Battalion’s Charlie Company.
The incident occurred around 11:45 at Sitio Manluya, Brgy. Tuyom.
“Ambush talaga ang nangyari… sakay sila (Esguerra and other soldiers) ng trak nila, kukuha sana ng tropa para dalhin sana sa bundok,” Chief Insp. Romeo Leyte, Cauayan Police chief, said in a phone interview.
“Sniping ito, actually fire ambush, natsambahan ang isang officer namin… single shot,” said Maj. Gen. Jose Mabanta, commander of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division which has operational control of the 47th IB.
Suspected NPA members carried out the ambush, Mabanta said. (John Roson)
