Armed men ambushed a vehicle carrying barangay and town officials of Talakag, Bukidnon, on Saturday afternoon, leaving two dead and two seriously injured, police said.

Fernando No-on, chairman of Brgy. Dominorog, died of gunshot wounds and got burned when the vehicle burst into flames, according to Insp. Adolfo Mercado Jr., Talakag Police chief.

“Hindi pa lang malaman kung saan ‘yung mga tama niya (No-on) kasi nasunog siya n’ung magliyab ‘yung sasakyan. ‘Yung tatlong kasama niya nakalabas pa pero isa namatay at ‘yung dalawa injured,” Mercado said by phone.

Municipal hall employee Aniceto Aranas, 39, succumbed to two bullet wounds while town treasurer Editha Aranas and barangay kagawad David Palacio are recuperating in hospitals in Malaybalay City and Cagayan de Oro, Mercado said.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. while No-on was driving his Isuzu Fuego pick-up (WFX-877) through Purok 1, Brgy. Dominorog, from Talakag proper.

Three men carrying long firearms suddenly opened fire on the vehicle as it was manuevering an ascending road, according to Mercado.

“Isa sa mga theory namin, tinapakan pa nung barangay chairman ‘yung accelarator para makatakas sila kaya nag-overheat yung sasakyan at nasunog. Pero may mga nagsabi rin na sinunog,” the police official said.

Several angles are being looked into the incident, including politics and land disputes in Brgy. Dominorog, Mercado added. (John Roson)
