Suspected Abu Sayyaf members abducted a midwife married to a former soldier in Jolo, Sulu, Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Director Felicisimo Khu, chief of the PNP Directorate for Integrated Police Operations in Western Mindanao, identified the victim as Evangeline Taverisma, 57, of Brgy. Asturias.

Taverisma, married to a retired Army soldier, was on her way home after rendering duty at the barangay’s Rural Health Unit around 3 p.m. when four men with caliber.-45 pistols dragged her into a red Toyota Tamaraw jitney, Khu said in a text message.

The kidnappers are believed to be members of the group of Nasir Timbang and one commander Palu, according to the police official.

“Mga low-ranking members ng Abu Sayyaf ito,” Khu said when reached by phone, adding that authorities have yet to recieve information if the abductors are seeking ransom.

“Alam naman natin ang usual na motive, pera-pera lang sila, but until such time na makatanggap tayo ng ransom demand, we do not consider it as a kidnap-for-ransom case,” Khu said. (John Roson)
