Unidentified armed men, apparently searching for more firearms, dug a hole outside former ARMM Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan’s home in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao, a military official said.

Several men were spotted digging the floor of a “waiting shed” outside Ampatuan’s home around 2:30 a.m. Thursday so troops were sent to the area, Army 6th Infantry Division spokesman Col. Prudencio Asto said.

The men, however, hurriedly left upon seeing members of the 45th Infantry Battalion arrive, he said.

“Ang nakikita naming prospect ng mga ito, baril or siguro pera,” Asto said by phone.

Additional troops have been sent to the area, bringing trained dogs to determine what was buried under the kiosk, he added.

Soldiers were also ordered to conduct checkpoints in Shariff Aguak and Datu Unsay after the incident.

Troops found thousands of firearms and millions of ammunition buried under Ampatuan properties after several members of the clan, including Zaldy, were arrested for the 2009 Maguindanao massacre. (John Roson)
