Elite Army troopers were ambushed by the Abu Sayyaf in Patikul, Sulu, Sunday morning but killed a member of the bandit group, the military said.
Members of the Force Reconnaissance and Light Reaction companies were conducting a “re-entry” operation in Brgy. Bunkaong around 9:10 a.m. when they were ambushed, Army chief Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz said in a text message.
The troops, however, killed and recovered the body of a still unidentified bandit and suffered no casualty, Ortiz said.
The clash came more than a week after seven Marine troopers got killed, two of whom were beheaded, in an encounter with Abu Sayyaf members in Brgy. Panglayahan, also in Patikul. (John Roson)
