Two New People’s Army (NPA) members reportedly got killed in a clash with government troops in Tapaz, Capiz, on Saturday morning, a military official said.
Intelligence personnel on the ground reported that the rebels extricated wounded members, but two, including an “amazon” (female rebel), expired, Army chief Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz said in a text message.
Troops, meanwhile, recovered from the site two M16 rifles, an airgun, a sack of ammonium nitrate, 32 empty cans believed to be used for making improvised explosives, two gallons of gasoline, 10 backpacks, and subversive documents, he said.
The clash between members of the 61st Infantry Battalion and rebels led by Francisco Balois alias Tonying, a platoon leader of the NPA Komiteng Rehiyon Panay’s Central Front, started 8:20 a.m. and went on until around 3 p.m., according to Ortiz. (John Roson)
