President Benigno Aquino III directed the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to promote the lady police chief of Trento, Agusan del Sur, who led her personnel in repelling a rebel attack last month.

Inspector Charity Galvez should be promoted to the next higher rank of senior inspector because of her feat, Aquino said after awarding the former the PNP Medalya ng Katapangan in Monday’s 110th Police Service anniversary rites in Camp Crame.

“Parang bago ho ang insidente, inspector siya (Galvez), maganda ang ginawa niya, inspector pa rin. Matagal ho yatang maging senior inspector. Suwerte ho nandito Napolcom, mukhang maco-confirm na nila ang senior inspector,” the President said.

Galvez, said to be the first lady officer given the Katapangan medal, led 30 cops in fighting off about 250 communist rebels who attacked the Trento Police Station on July 30.

Also given the medal was Chief Insp. Allan Umipig, of the Metro Manila Southern Police District. He figured in an armed encounter with member of a notorious robbery/hold-up group in Parañaque City on June 4.

In the same ceremony, Aquino also gave posthumous promotion to SPO2 Ricky Agwit and SPO2 Jeff Domingo, both of the Ifugao Police Provincial Office. The two died in a landslide while on a rescue mission at the height of Tropical Storm Juaning on July 27. (John Roson)
