Two policemen, including an official, were injured in a shootout with armed men near the municipal hall of San Juan, Batangas, Tuesday morning.
Those injured were an officer with a rank of inspector and a PO2, who is in serious condition, provincial police operations chief Supt. Nicolas Torre III said in a phone interview.
Torre, also the provincial police spokesman, declined to give names of the injured until their families were informed, but said both are members of the Batangas PNP Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB).
The shootout occurred around 9 a.m. while a PIB convoy was passing through Sitio Riverside, Brgy. Poblacion, just a few blocks away from the municipal hall.
“‘Yung mga pulis natin papunta sa isang surveillance operation and along the way may sinusundan silang Revo. Magabal yung takbo nila sa kalsada, nang biglang bumaba ‘yung mga sakay ng Revo at pinagbabaril ‘yung lead vehicle (ng convoy) kaya nagkaputukan at takbuhan na,” Torre said.
Three suspects, one of whom was injured, were caught in a chase and are currently being interrogated, he said.
Two of those captured yielded short firearms while policemen also recovered the Revo. (John Roson)
