Government troops killed the leader of a “lost command” of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in a clash in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte, early Saturday, a military official said.

Killed was Abdulmajid Abdulhaman alias Mollong, leader of a group of lawless elements of the MILF operating in the province, Army chief Lt. Gen. Arturo Ortiz said.

The clash in Brgy. Lakiki started around 6:30 a.m. and lasted 30 minutes, Ortiz said in a text message.

Members of the 44th Infantry Battalion, PNP Special Action Force, Sibuco Police, and Sibuco Councilor Jan Jan Eding were serving an arrest warrant in the area when they were fired upon by about five men led by Abdulhaman, according to the Army chief.

It was not immediately known what the warrant was for, but police records show that Adbulhaman is wanted for extortion and killings.

Adbulhaman is also among 18 people charged for killing PNP medal of valor awardee PO2 Jamaron Sandag.

Sandag, a former PNP SAF member, recieved the award in 2007 for leading a group of injured cops in defending the Siocon Police Station against more than 100 Muslim insurgents and Abu Sayyaf members in 2003.

His decomposing body was found in a landfill in Rodriguez, Rizal, on March 16, 2009, three weeks after he was reportedly hostaged by a group of armed men in Taguig City. (John Roson)
