At least 13 people got killed while 40 others were injured when a dump truck ferrying them to a cemetery overturned at a cliff in Barili, Cebu, Thursday afternoon, police said.
“Eight died on the spot, the others expired at the hospital,” Chief Insp. Marlon Gumabao, Barili Police chief, said in a phone interview.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the mountainous area of Brgy. Candampas.
The truck, owned by the local government unit, was on its way to the Barili Cemetery in Brgy. Balaw when its brakes malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to turn upside down.
“Bumibiyahe sila doon sa bundok, while on the way hindi na daw na-control ng driver yung sasakyan kasi nawalan na ng preno,” Gumabao said.
Passengers of the truck who were seriously injured were brought to the Vicento Sotto Memorial Hospital while those who sustained slight injuries were taken to the Barili District Hospital.
The driver, whose name Gumabao declined to give, is currently under the Barili Police’s custody and will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple injuries. (John Roson)
