Three robbers and two security guards got killed while three others, including two policemen, were injured in an armored van heist in Cebu City yesterday (Monday) morning.

Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe, Cebu City Police director, said the heist occurred around 9:30 as personnel of a China Bank armored van were about to deliver cash to a money changer inside the Robinsons Mall in Fuente Osmena Circle.

Bank teller Lewin Surig and a security guard were bringing a bag of money when three men, who were apparently “waiting,” shot them and took the cash, Buenafe said in a phone interview.

“Binaril nila (suspects) ‘yung guard na escort doon sa loob saka ‘yung teller na nagdadala nung pera, tapos ‘yung isang guwardiyang nakabantay dun sa may armored van binaril din nila, patay,” Buenafe said.

Surig suffered a bullet wound on the foot while guards Lito Udang and Leofer Etac, both of the Puritan Security Agency, died.

Two policemen, identified as PO1 Jay Catacutan and PO1 Roy Ceniza, were roving the area that time when they heard the shots and chased the suspects up to the “interior” of Ramos st.

Catacutan and Ceniza cornered the suspects but were injured in an exchange of fire, so they called for backup, Buenafe said.

Reinforcements from the Special Weapons and Tactics unit arrived minutes later and killed two of the suspects on the spot.

The third suspect expired while being brought to the hospital, Buenafe said.

“Sa initial investigation natin, galing pa ang mga ito (suspects) ng Ozamis,” Buenafe said.

Police recovered from the slain suspects firearms and the bag, which contains a still undetermined amount of cash.

Buenafe said employees of the money changer were expecting China Bank to deliver P1.2 million.

Police and bank representatives were set to open the bag and present it to media as of this writing.(John Roson)
