The military has suggested that militia units be established inside mining firms that were attacked recently by the New People’s Army (NPA).

Colonel James Jacob, commander of the Army 402nd Brigade, suggested that a Special Cafgu Active Auxilliary be put up inside the companies’ compounds to strengthen their security, according to a statement from the 4th Infantry Division.

“Said SCAA will undergo a military training so as to be equipped with high-powered firearms which is enough to secure the area against any threat group, especially the NPA,” the statement read.

Major General Victor A Felix, commander of the 4th Infantry Division, said the SCAA will secure all vital installations while the Infantry Battalions will be concentrating on combat operations.

“With this, we can assure the people and the investors that the recent atrocities will never happen again,” he said.

Jacob made the proposal in a meeting with officials of Taganito Mining Corp. (TMC) and the Taganito High Pressure Acid Leaching (THPAL) Corp. in Claver, Surigao del Norte, on Sunday.

Jacob was appointed 402nd Brigade commander after Armed Forces chief Gen. Eduardo Oban relieved the former commander, Col. Rodrigo Diapana, and his deputy Col. Cresente Maligmat for failing to prevent the raids on TMC, THPAL, and and Platinum Group Metals Corp. (John Roson)
