Basilan Gov. Jum Akbar’s brother and his wife got killed after being shot by still unidentified armed men in front of the Basilan State College in Isabela City on Monday night, police said.
The lady governor’s brother, Engr. Basser Jainuddin, died on the spot because of several bullet wounds to the body, Zamboanga Peninsula regional police director Chief Supt. Elpidio de Asis said in a text message.
Jainuddin’s wife Amina, who is also a barangay chairwoman, was brought to the Infante Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by doctors, according to the police official.
The incident occurred around 7:05 p.m., while Jainuddin and his wife were passing by the Basilan State College in Brgy. Sumagdang.
Jainuddin and his wife were on the way home after visiting the former’s mother, but upon reaching the school were followed and shot by two men on a motorcycle, De Asis said.
The assailants fled towards a still unknown direction after the incident, while responding policemen found at least seven empty bullet cartridges at the scene.
“Our investigators are looking at several angles, among which is personal grudge,” De Asis said in a phone interview.
Isabela City, though located in Basilan, is considered a part of Region 9 of the Zamboanga Peninsula after residents voted against the city’s inclusion to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao during the November 1989 plebiscite. (John Roson)
