A junior Army officer and one of his men were injured as a landmine planted by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members went off in Laak, Compostela Valley, early Wednesday.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman, said the explosion occurred around 4 a.m. while platoon of the 60th Infantry Battalion was patrolling at Sitio San Miguel, Brgy. Kidawa.

The platoon was patrolling the area on foot when its commander, a first lieutenant, stepped on the landmine’s “tripwire,” Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, spokesman of the Army 10th Infantry Division, said in a phone interview.

“‘Yung landmine may tripwire, ‘yun ang natapakan nung ating tinyente, injured siya sa paa at saka yung isang private first class, sila ay nasa hospital na natin sa Camp Panacan, Davao,” Paniza said. (John Roson)
