New People’s Army (NPA) members released the six foam bed vendors who they abducted in Davao City, the military said Wednesday.
A religious group called Sowing the Seeds of Peace (SSP) fetched the merchants in Paquibato district 6 p.m. Tuesday and transported them to the Misamis Oriental provincial capitol, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman Col. Leopoldo Galon said.
The merchants were then turned over to Misamis Oriental Vice Gov. Norris Babiera and held a press conference Wednesday with SSP members.
The six, all natives of Misamis Oriental, went to Paquibato district to sell foam beds and were supposed to return home on August 18, police said.
Authorities heard of the abduction later that month, but were only able to “confirm” it early September, when some of the merchants’ relatives sought Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s help.
During Wednesday’s press conference, SSP members called for the release of “political prisoners,” Galon said. (John Roson)
