Unidentified men set off an explosive inside an elementary school in Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, Friday night but no one was injured, police said.

Chief Supt. Elpidio de Asis, Zamboanga Peninsula regional police director, said the explosion occurred inside the campus of the Margosatubig Regional Pilot School in Brgy. Poblacion around 7:10 p.m.

“Two classrooms were slightly damaged and there was no casualty. It is believed to have been caused by a dynamite,” De Asis said, citing an initial report from the Margosatubig Police.

Senior Supt. Jose Bayani Gucela, provincial police director, said the explosion, which shattered glass windows and a ceiling, could be part of a “diversionary plan” by lawless elements that police and military forces are pursuing in neighboring Zamboanga Sibugay.

“Siguro part of the diversionary plan nung grupo na na-engkuwentro ng AFP (dun sa Zamboanga Sibugay),” Gucela said in a phone interview.

Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Sur are separated only by the Illana Bay.

“Minobilize na ‘yung tanods and CVOs sa areas na posibleng daungan ng lawless elements,” Gucela said. (John Roson)
