A former Army sergeant wanted for killing his superiors in Fort Bonifacio during a fit of rage two years ago got killed in a shootout with authorities in Tigbauan, Iloilo, early Friday.

Senior Supt. Gil Lebin, provincial police director, said Sgt. Elias Tial shot it out with police and military personnel who tried to arrest him around 7:30 a.m. in Brgy. Danao.

“Seserve-an siya (Tial) ng warrant of arrest, eh lumaban, napatay siya… ito eh masasabi nating hindi talaga pahuhuling buhay, ‘yung lugar na pinagtataguan niya masukal. Mayroon din siyang talagang bahay na may foxhole pa,” Lebin said in a phone interview.

“Ito na ang fifth attempt na mahuli siya (Tial),” the police official added. Authorities later recovered from the slain suspect a caliber-.45 pistol.

Tial, a former member of the elite 12th Special Forces Company, killed his superiors 1Lt. Gerald Fuentes and Msgt. Eliseo dela Cruz Jr. inside their barracks in Fort Bonifacio on February 25, 2009.

Captain Benito Ramos Jr. and Capt. Dionilo Aragon Jr., commander and executive officer of that company, respectively, suffered multiple bullet wounds. Aragaon died in the hospital the next day.

According to the Army, Tial was frustrated for not being able to go home immediately on February 21 that year, when his father died. His uncle also passed away the previous month.

On June 2 this year, Tial also shot to death 77-year-old “manghihilot” Perpetua Aliparo in Brgy. Danao. Tial blamed Aliparo for his father’s death, police said. (John Roson)
