Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members got killed in a shootout with authorities in Bacolor, Pampanga, Tuesday morning, police reported.

The slain suspects have yet to be identified, but they yielded three copies of an “extortion letter” with logos and letterheads of the Bagong Hukbong Bayan and Palermo Ortanez Command, according to an initial report from the Central Luzon regional police.

The incident occurred around 3:50 a.m. along the MacArthur Highway in Sitio Banlic, Brgy. Cabalantian.

Superintendent Romeo de Castro, Central Luzon regional police spokesman, said members of the Bacolor Police and Pampanga PNP Provincial Public Safety Company were conducting a checkpoint and were about to flag down two men on a motorcycle when these ignored the lawmen and sped off.

“A brief case ensued. Shots rang out as the suspects fired towards the pursuing PNP personnel. The encounter lasted for a few minutes [and] resulted in the suspects’ death,” De Castro said in a statement.

Aside from the letters, which also bear the name “Ka Terry,” police recovered at the scene a caliber-.45 pistol with two live ammunition and an empty shell, a caliber-.45 pistol with four live ammunition, a blue motorcycle without a registration plate, and empty shells from caliber-.45 pistols, an M16 rifle, and a caliber-.9mm handgun.
