Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members ambushed a passenger motorcycle in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, early Tuesday, leaving a militiaman’s wife dead and three others injured, the military said.
Elorde Lindahay, of the Civilian Active Auxiliary, was slightly wounded in the leg while his wife Eluna got killed, Maj. Eugenio Osias, Army 4th Infantry Division spokesman, said.
Lilibeth Castillo, also a member of the CAA, was unhurt while her husband William and habal-habal driver Bentoy Tomakin are both injured.
The incident occurred around 6:20 a.m., while the habal-habal carrying the Lindahays and Castillos was passing through Purok 3, Sitio Lantad, Brgy. Kibanban.
Four armed rebels, led by a certain Eke Dahunay, opened fire on the motorcycle, Osias said.
Upon hearing the burst of gunfire, CAA members led by Cpl. Abdul Abduraman rushed to the scene and brought the victims to Sitio Lantad proper. Also found at the site were several empty shels of an AK-47 rifle.
According to Osias, the Lindahays and Castillos were on their to way to Cagayan de Oro City where they are scheduled to attend a court hearing on Thursday.
They are supposed to stand as witnesses against captured rebel leader Reden Libona, the former secretary of the North-Central Mindanao Regional Committee’s Guerilla Front 4B, Osias said. (John Roson)
