The police chief of Bayabas, Surigao del Sur, and one of his personnel died after shooting each other inside their station on Monday while quarreling over office policies, officials said.
Inspector Edgardo Dico was taken to the Adela Serra Ty Hospital in Tandag City due to a bullet wound on the abdomen but was pronounced dead on arrival, Chief Supt. Reynaldo Rafal, Caraga regional police director, said.
Police Officer 3 Lord Anthony Lerin was brought to the same hospital due to bullet wounds on the thigh and shoulder, but was transferred to the Democrito Plaza Memorial Hospital in Agusan del Sur, where he was also declared dead on arrival.
The incident occurred around 12:05 p.m. inside the Bayabas Police Station.
“Galing sila sa pagche-checkpoint noon, habang naghahanda ‘yung iba para sa tanghalian sa labas, naiwan silang dalawa doon sa loob at doon na nagkaputukan,” regional police spokesman Supt. Martin Gamba said in a phone interview.
Dico shot Lerin with an M16 rifle while the latter shot his superior with a caliber-.45 pistol, Gamba said.
Gamba and other personnel from the regional police headquarters were sent to the area on Tuesday to investigate.
He said they are looking into several angles, including a misunderstanding over office policies, as the possible cause of the incident.
Rafal said initial probe results reaching him indicated that Lerin was at fault.
“Hindi sumusunod ang PNCO (police non-commissioned officer). Problematic. Bad attitude,” he said. (John Roson)
