Four people, including two boys, died while at least eight others were injured when a grenade lobbed by still unidentified suspects exploded inside a home in Midsayap, North Cotabato, Wednesday night, police and military officials said.
Senior Supt. Cornelio Salinas, North Cotabato provincial police director, said the explosion occurred inside the home of Dina Madrigal, 57, in Brgy. Nalin 1 around 7:30 p.m.
Killed on the spot was Hilario Villaflor, 60, while several other people at the house suffered shrapnel wounds and were taken to different hospitals, Salinas said.
John Lloyd Anza, 8, and Eric John Quirol, 12, died before reaching the Dela Cruz Hospital in Libungan while Isidro Gisalan Awa, 42, died at the Midsayap Community Hospital, said Col. Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman.
Also brought to the hospital in Libungan were Madrigal, 19-year-old Rhoda Mae Sela who is pregnant, Isidro Awa, 14; Fransbeth Ansa, 8; and Sofia Anza, 5.
Hydee Paraqueles, 12, was taken to the Midsayap Community Hospital while a mother and her daughter were brought to the Cotabato Regional Hospital, Galon said.
A motorcycle-riding person lobbed the grenade at Madrigal’s home which is just near the barangay hall, Galon said, citing initial investigation results.
Investigators found the grenade’s safety lever and pin at the site of explosion, Salinas said, adding they have yet to determine the motive for the attack. (John Roson)
