Unidentified armed men shot to death an anti-narcotics policeman in front of a school in Bacolod City Thursday morning, the city police chief said.
Police Officer 3 Rolando Malate was declared dead around 11 a.m. while doctors were trying to revive him at the hospital, Senior Supt. Ricardo dela Paz, Bacolod City Police director, said.
“Pinaputukan siya (Malate) ng pitong beses ng isa sa mga suspek with a caliber-.45 pistol, mayroon siyang apat na tama sa dibdib at dalawa sa leeg,” Dela Paz said in a phone interview.
The incident occurred around 7 a.m., shortly after Malate, a member of the City Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group, dropped his children at the Tay Tung Chinese School along Libertad st.
“Nakaugalian niya (Malate) na na after ihatid ‘yung mga anak niya sa school, ay tumawid sa kabilang kanto para mag-coffee. Habang pina-park niya ‘yung kotse niya, hindi pa siya nakakababa, lumapit yung dalawang naka-motorsiklo at binanatan siya nung backrider,” Dela Paz said.
Dela Paz ordered the formation of Task Group Malate, which he heads, to conduct a thorough investigation on the killing.
“Very active siya (Malate) sa anti-drugs campaign dito so tinitingnan namin ngayon ang possibility na work-related itong incident. Maraming accomplishments ang CAIDSOTG recently, even against prominent drug personalities, baka napag-initan siya,” the police official said. (John Roson)
