Six people, including a young girl, drowned after being swept away by waters of a swollen creek in Poona Piagapo, Lanao del Norte, authorities confirmed Sunday.
Ana Cañeda, Office of Civil Defense-10 director, identified the fatalities as Rahcma, 54, Normila, 35, Subaida, 48, Aslimah, 32, all surnamed Ampang; Noraima Talib, 26, and Ainah Ali, 5.
Three other members of the Ampang family, identified as Bulawan, 28, Cosari, 28, and Salima, 18, survived, Cañeda said in a phone interview.
The nine, all members of the Maranao community and relatives, were crossing a tributary of the Mailunod River on foot Thursday evening when the incident occurred.
“‘Dun pa lang sa tributary na creek, bumuhos na ‘yung flashflood, pag-swell ng tubig ayun na, isang bugso ‘yung tubig eh, naanod sila,” Cañeda said, adding that heavy rain caused the waters to rise.
All the fatalities were recovered on Friday, most of them in Brgy. Lapayan, in the neighboring town of Kauswagan, according to the regional civil defense chief. (John Roson)
