Three suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members got killed as government troops swooped down on an encampment of the rebel group in Makilala, North Cotabato, Sunday afternoon, the military said.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman, said members of the Army’s 57th Infantry Battalion overran the encampment at Sitio Ilitasan, Brgy. Biangan after a 30-minute gunbattle.

Soldiers encountered about 30 rebels, who later withdrew leaving three killed comrades behind, Galon said in a text message.

There were no casualties on the government side, he said, adding that troops also recovered two M16 rifles and two M14 rifles from the encounter site.

Major Harold Cabunoc, Army spokesman, said the 57th IB has asked local officials’ help in identifying the slain rebels and giving them proper burial. (John Roson)
