Two people got killed while another was injured in a roadside bombing in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao, as provincial officials, including Gov. Esmael Mangudadatu, gathered to celebrate the town’s anniversary, police and military officials said.

Senior Supt. Marcelo Pintac, Maguindanao provincial police director, said the blast occurred past 10 a.m. along the National Road in Brgy. Dalican, about a kilometer from the Datu Odin Sinsuat Municipal Hall.

“May casualties kasi may mga dumadaan noon, may activity pa naman dito, ‘yung 70th anniversary ng munisipyo ng Datu Odin Sinsuat,” Pintac said in a phone interview.

Mangudadatu, the provincial board members, and Cong. Bai Sandra Sema were in the town to take part the celebration, but were not harmed as they were far from the blast site, Pintac said.

The explosion happened in front of the home of late Provincial Board Member Rusman Sinsuat.

Sinsuat and another person got killed when an explosion, also a roadside bombing incident, hit Mangudadatu’s convoy in neighboring Sultan Kudarat province on August 15.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman, said the civilian who got injured in Thursday’s blast lost both legs.

Initial findings by the Army Explosives and Ordnance Disposal unit indicate that the bomb was placed inside a “padyak,” a makeshift passenger motorcycle that uses a pumpboat engine. (John Roson)
