Authorities seized hundreds of pieces of explosives in a raid at a warehouse owned by a Chinese businessman in Baleno, Masbate, on Wednesday, police reported Thursday.

Among those seized were 491 pieces of explosives marked with “Nitro EM 1500 Emulsion Explosive,” 14 ammonium nitrate granules, several bundles of detonation cords, and bundles of blasting caps, Chief Insp. Romeo Lupango, Masbate Provincial Police spokesman, said.

The explosives were seized when police swooped down on a warehouse owned by Cai Tsin Cong at Sitio Panal, Brgy. Docol, 2:30 a.m.

The raid was carried out on a search warrant issued by Masbate Regional Trial Court Branch 47 Judge Maximino Ables for illegal possession of explosives.

Cong, who uses the alias Ruben Chua, was not around during the raid, which was witnessed by two security guards and two other people, Lupango said.

The raid came three days after authorities seized several kilos of explosives at a bus inside a ferry in Masbate.

On Sunday, police and Coast Guard personnel seized 11 kilograms of trinitrotoluene or TNT, 5 ½ kilograms of C4, 800 blasting caps, 300 meters of detonating cord, and 6 ¾ kilograms of prime booster from an Elavil bus (TYU-264).

The bus was then inside the ferry M/V King Frederick, which came from Albay, according to a statement from the Department of Transport and Communication. (John Roson)
