Four suspected hijackers got killed in a shootout with authorities in Sto. Tomas, Batangas, early Tuesday, police said.
Two of the suspects have already been identified as Roberto Rio and Jun Castillo while the others remain unidentified, Supt. Nicolas Torre, deputy director for operations of the Batangas provincial police, said.
The running gunbattle occurred around 4:30 a.m. in Brgy. San Roque.
Two hours earlier, the Sto. Tomas Police recieved an alarm from their counterparts in Calamba City, Laguna, that a truck was hi-jacked at the Turbina junction by heavily-armed men on a white van, Torre said.
Members of the Sto. Tomas Police set up checkpoints in San Rafael and San Roque, but the first roadblock was ignored and fired upon by the suspects around 4:15 a.m., Torre said.
The policemen at the checkpoint, along with members of the 4th Regional Special Operations Group, Intelligence Division, and Public Safety Battalion chased the suspects and were also fired upon so they retaliated until the suspects got killed, he said.
Found at the scene were two Baby Armalite rifles, two caliber-.45 pistols, a white Hyundai Starex van, and five cartons of CDO products. (John Roson)
