A pregnant woman and a young boy got killed while 23 other people were injured when the passenger mini-bus they were riding fell into a ravine in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, Tuesday noon, police said.
Rochelle Lagahit, who was seven months pregnant, and a still unidentified 8-year-old boy died on the spot, Supt. Antonieto Cañete, Himamaylan City Police chief, said.
Twenty-one other passengers and the conductor were brought to a local hospital while bus driver Benjie Himalaya, 35, was transferred to a medical facility in Bacolod City due to severe injuries, Cañete said in a phone interview.
The incident occurred in Brgy. Caradio-an around 12:20 p.m., while Himalaya was driving the MGM Bus Liner (FWP-173) to Bacolod, Cañete said.
The bus was about to cross a bridge, but went straight to the outermost lane instead of the bridge’s lane until it “nosedived” into the 20-feet ravine, the police official said.
“Sabi niya (Himalaya) may nakita siyang kulay puti na dumaan kaya doon siya napatingin at di nakapag-drive ng maayos. Pero sa tingin ko nakaidlip siya, kasi very straight naman ‘yung kalsada,” Cañete said. (John Roson)
