A construction worker got injured as armed men fired at a group of people working on a US-funded road project in Unkaya Pukan, Basilan, early Saturday, police said.

Contract worker Komenie Muhammad, 32, suffered a bullet wound on his buttocks and was brought to the Army 4th Scout Ranger Battalion’s (4th SRB) camp, Senior Supt. Alex Lineses, Basilan Provincial Police director, said.

About 10 fully-armed men carried out the “harassment” around 6 a.m. in Brgy. Amaloy.

Muhammad, a resident of Tuburan proper in Muhammad Ajul town, he was given first aid by US troops co-located at the 4th SRB camp, Lineses said, denying a report that US soldiers were among those fired upon.

“Negative US troops, only construction worker. Tinamaan sa puwit and ‘yung US forces ang nag-first aid,” the police official said.

“May project doon ang USAID and may kampo ng Ranger doon sa area, co-located ang US forces,” he added.

Authorities are still tring to determine the suspects’ identities and motive. (John Roson)
