Five elderly people got killed while another was seriously injured when a relative suffering from mental illness hacked them with a hatchet and machete in Numancia, Aklan, early Saturday, police said.

Killed on the spot were suspect Errel Roldan’s grandmother Anunsacion Rivas, 92; grandfather Luciano Rivas, 94; Salvacion Rivas, 84, another grandmother; and Baltazar Rivas, 52, an uncle, PO3 Nida Gregas, Aklan Provincial Police information officer, said.

Relatives rushed Roldan’s aunts Rosa, 65, and Felicidad Rivas, 65, to the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbukon Memorial Hospital in Kalibo, but the latter was declared dead upon arrival by doctors, Gregas said in a phone interview.

The incident occurred inside the victims’ homes in Purok 3, Brgy. Bulwang, around 5:30 a.m.

Members of the Numancia Police got a call from a village official saying that a man went amok in the area, but arrived only to find out that four persons were already dead.

“Dalawang bahay ito na pinasok niya (Roldan)… apparently tulog ang mga biktima noong mangyari kasi naka-kumot pa sila,” Gregas said.

Anunsacion and Luciano, parents of Roldan’s mother, both suffered hack wounds on the face. Salvacion and Baltazar died of hack wounds on the head, with the hatchet found on the latter’s head. Felicidad lost a hand and some fingers.

It was learned that the 27-year-old Roldan was sent by his parents to the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center in Pototan, Iloilo, after he burned their house six months ago, apparently during a fit of his illness. He returned home after a three-month stay.

“Sabi daw ng phyisician niya (Roldan) naging stable na siya, kaya ni-release. Kaso hindi yata na-maintain ang medication,” Gregas said, citing accounts from one of the suspect’s relatives.

Roldan is presently detained at the Numancia Police Station. “Nakakausap naman siya, sabi ng mga pulis natin doon ay nagugutom at nauuhaw daw,” Gregas said. (John Roson)
