Up to 110 people were hospitalized while hundreds of others were forced to leave their homes as ammonia leaked from an iceplant in Zamboanga City the other night (Wednesday), police said.

Senior Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, Zamboanga City police director, said 27 people were still in different hospitals as of Thursday morning.

Ammonia leaked from the Leo Fishing Iceplant in Brgy. Ayala around 9 p.m. after one of its pipelines burst, De Ocampo said in a text message.

About 100 families or more or less 500 to 600 individuals temporarily evacuated because of the fumes, he said.

The local police is coordinating with other concerned agencies to determine what caused the iceplant’s pipe to burst, De Ocampo said. (John Roson)
