Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members shot dead a Filipino businessman of Swiss descent at a flea market in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, early Wednesday, a military spokesman said.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman, identified the victim as Patrick Wineger, a rubber plantation owner and resident of Brgy. Saguing, Makilala.

The incident occurred around 7:40 a.m. at a “talipapa” in Vilamarso st.

Wineger was doing marketing chores when two suspected rebels on a motorcycle pumped caliber-.45 bullets into different parts of his body and quickly fled, Galon said in a text message.

Aside from farming and selling goods, Wineger was also active in peace campaigns in North Cotabato and prioritized former rebels when hiring plantation workers, according to the regional military spokesman.

Authorities are still looking for the assailants, one of whom was described by witnesses as wearing a dirty-white shirt and black baseball cap and the other, a black calico vest, Galon said. (John Roson)
