More than 30 homes and establishments were destroyed when fire hit a residential area in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Senior Insp. Gretchin Cinco, Southern Mindanao regional police spokesperson, said local police learned of the fire in Purok Bayanihan, Brgy. West, around 3 p.m.

The fire allegedly started from the boarding house owned by a certain Mr. Asis and quickly spread within the Pereyras Compound, Cinco said.

At the compound, the blaze damaged five more boarding houses, 18 “temporary installed households,” and seven lumber and hardware shops, she said.

Personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection declared the blaze under control around 4 p.m.

Fire investigators have yet to determine what caused the fire and the amount of damage it dealt, Cinco said. (John Roson)
