A soldier got killed while nine other were injured when government troops clashed with suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members in Catubig, Northern Samar, Tuesday morning.
Members of the 34th Infantry Battalion were conducting operations in Brgy. Nago-ocan around 6 a.m. when they encountered about 20 rebels, Lt. Col. Niceforo Diaz, Army 8th Infantry Division spokesman, said.
“During the course of troop maneuvers, may sumabog na dalawang landmine, nagpasabog ang NPA,” Diaz said by phone.
The clash last for an hour before the rebels withdrew, he said.
The military withheld the slain soldier’s name until his family is notified. Diaz said the fatality had the rank of sergeant.
The injured, on the other hand, were brought to the nearest hospital via helicopter around 10:40 a.m.
Meanwhile, suspected NPA members also landmined members of the 10th Infantry Division’s Headquarters Service Battalion in Purok 3, Brgy. Nueva Visayas, Mawab, Compostela Valley, around 10:50 a.m.
The troops, led by Maj. Abdillah Pangcatan, were on a 6×6 truck when the landmine went off, Senior Insp. Gretchin Cinco, Southern Mindanao regional police deputy spokesperson, said.
No casualties were reported on the government side, she said.
Pursuit operations were launched against the rebels in Northern Samar and Compostela Valley. (John Roson)
