Eight people, including a young girl, were killed while 18 others were injured when the vegetable truck they were riding fell into a canal in Talakag, Bukidnon, Friday afternoon, police said.

Killed on the spot were Enerio Hinganan, Joel Victor, couple Susan and Ruben Sambile, school teacher Priscilla Lagat, 3-year-old Ashley Joy Besto, and a still unidentified truck helper, SPO3 Ramon Cajan Jr., Talakag Police traffic investigator, said in a phone interview.

Nineteen other people, including driver Timmy Besto (the young girl’s father) and Elpidio Jabay, were brought to a local hospital but the latter was declared dead upon arrival by doctors, Cajan said.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. while the elder Besto was driving the Fuso Canter truck (KRJ-942) along the National Highway in Sitio San Fermin, Brgy. Salukot.

“Nag-inquire kami sa mga survivors, ang sabi nila dumaan sila sa pababa na daan at nawalan ng preno ‘yung trak kaya nahirapan ‘yung driver na ma-control yung sasakyan,” Cajan said.

“Nahulog ‘yung trak sa canal ng kabilang lane at pagkahulog sa sementadong canal gumulong ng dalawang beses,” he said.

The truck was on its way to deliver 80 sacks of vegetables from Brgy. Miarayon to Cagayan de Oro City. Most of the passengers just hitched a ride, Cajan said. (John Roson)
