One soldier was killed when government troops clashed with New People’s Army (NPA) members in Tubay, Agusan del Norte, on Saturday as military operations in the province continued for almost two weeks.

Colonel Leopoldo Galon, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman, said the fatality was a private of the Army’s 14th Scout Ranger Company.

Members of the 14th SRC were on combat patrol operations when they encountered about 20 rebels at Sitio Kuson-kuson, Brgy. Tagmamarkay, Tubay, around 2:50 p.m., Galon said.

Firefight lasted for 10 minutes, after which the rebels withdrew. Five rounds from a Howitzer cannon were fired at the rebels’ withdrawal route, he said.

The latest skirmish occurred 12 days after members of the 5th Scout Ranger Company clashed with about 50 rebels in Kitcharao, located about 30 kilometers of Tubay.

A suspected rebel was killed and one soldier was injured in the March 5 clash.

On March 11, an Air Force UH-1H helicopter sent to fetch a soldier and bring supplies to operating troops crashed in Kitcharao, leaving seven troopers injured. (John Roson)
