An explosion of a still unknown origin rocked the pier which serves as the “pick-up spot” for visitors to the Underground River of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Monday morning, but no one was reported injured, police officials said.
The explosion occurred around 10 a.m. at the parking space of the pier in Sitio Sabang, Brgy. Kabayugan, Chief Supt. Artemio Hicban, Mimaropa regional police director, said in a text message.
No one was reported injured, but the blast damaged a Mitsubishi pick-up (TEI-950) owned by one Arnel Camama Tagbiliwan, Hicban said in a text message.
Senior Supt. Abad Osit, Puerto Princesa City Police director, said the explosion also ruined a patch of soil where there were flowering plants.
“Andito na ang EOD (Explosives and Ordnance Disposal team) at kasalukuyan pang iniimbestigahan kung anong cause (ng pagsabog)… ang tingin namin dito, ‘yung initial, ay gamit ito sa pangingisda, illegal fishing, pero iniimbestigahan pa,” Osit said in a phone interview.
The pier in Sitio Sabang is situated 10 to 20 minutes away, by boat, to the Underground River and serves as the jump-off point for toursits who want to visit the river touted as one of the “New 7 Wonders of Nature.” (John Roson)
