Armed men shot dead a barangay chairman who works as a radio blocktimer in Davao City on Sunday, police said.

Aldion Narciso Layao, chairman of Brgy. Lacson in Calinan district, was brought to the Robillo Hospital due to bullet wounds on the neck, but was declared dead on arrival by doctors, city police director Senior Supt. Ronald dela Rosa said.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. while Layao was driving his Kia Sportage in Purok 4.

“Tinabihan siya ng dalawang naka-motor. Nakababa ‘yung bintana niya, tinapatan ng barrel ng pistol ‘yung leeg niya at pinutukan,” Dela Rosa said in a phone interview.

Layao, who works as a blocktimer at DXRA radio, suffered two bullet wounds on the neck. Police found at the scene three empty shells of a caliber-.45 pistol.

Dela Rosa said investigators have yet to identify the gunmen, but are now looking at two possible motives for the killing.

“Dalawa ito, politics na away-away dun sa barangay nila at saka his being an allegedly hard-hitting radio commentator. As of now ang malakas ay ‘yung politics,” the police official said. (John Roson)
