Two people, including a young girl, were killed while at least seven others were injured when a passenger bus collided head-on with a 10-wheeled truck in Plaridel, Quezon, Tuesday morning, police reported.

Truck driver Jerry Estuaria, 40, died on the spot while one of his passengers, identified as 9-year-old Rica Mae Orolfo, expired while being brought to a hospital, according to a report from the Quezon Provincial Police.

Still being treated at the Gumaca District Hospital and RAKK Medical Center are bus driver Armando Esclanda, 49, his passengers Redentor Albanio, 36, Edgar Delos Santos, 28, and Erwin Roldan, 41; and truck occupants Raymart Orolfo, 13, Jeffrey Metas, and Bryan Oliver, 19.

The incident occurred around 1:25 a.m., while Esclanda was driving the Lucena Lines bus (TYZ-534) from Quezon City to Calauag.

Esclanda lost control of the steering wheel while maneuvering at a curve along the Maharlika Highway in Brgy. Tumagay, until the bus collided with the Isuzu aluminum wing van (CSE-335) driven by Estuaria, according to the report.

Some of the bus passengers told police that they noticed Esclanda getting sleepy while approaching the curve. (John Roson)
