Four suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members were killed when government troops clashed with the rebel group in Lopez, Quezon, Friday noon, a military spokesman said.

Ground troops have yet to identify the slain rebels, who are comprised of three males and a female, Col. Generoso Bolina, Armed Forces Southern Luzon Command spokesman, said.

A platoon of the Army’s 85th Infantry Battalion encountered six rebels in Brgy. Penafrancia around 12:30 p.m., he said.

Soldiers were sent to the area after the military received reports that rebels were extorting money from residents, Bolina said.

After the firefight, troops recovered from the slain rebels two M16 rifles and an M653 baby armalite rifle.

Soldiers are pursuing the other rebels as of this writing. (John Roson)
