The parish priest of Tago, Surigao del Sur, lost some P20,000 cash after robbers broke into his car, which was parked inside his church’s compound.
Police reported the incident only on Friday night, by which time suspects have been identified and are being investigated.
Superintendent Martin Gamba, Caraga regional police spokesman, said the incident occurred around 2 a.m. April 28 at the garage of the La Purisima Concepcion Parish Church’s convent.
Several men broke the windshield of Fr. Apolinar Orozco’s red Isuzu Fuego (DSV-775) and took the priest’s wallet, which contained about P20,000 cash, Gamba said.
Orozco told investigators that he did not lock the garage as no such incident had happened in the church’s premises before.
Gamba said local police, after a follow-up investigation, identified Weedol Carcallas, Jesreel Ocliaso, Ronnie Magno, Mark Pontevedra, and Labby Vertical as suspects.
The five, all residents of Purok Calamanse, Brgy. Purisima, were allegedly seen near the convent before the incident and are believed to have perpetrated the crime when people in the convent were already asleep, he said.
Local police have taken fingerprint samples from the suspects and will compare these to prints found on the vehicle, Gamba said. (John Roson)
