Three teenagers and a young girl were killed while two other children were injured in a grenade explosion in Lingig, Surigao del Sur, police reported Monday night.
Killed on the spot were Michael Ambus, 17; Joselito Nonong, 19; and Nelbert Banog, 15. Aiko Mae Nonong, 12, was seriously wounded and brought to Lingig Community Hospital, but died along the way, Caraga regional police spokesman Supt. Martin Gamba said.
Two other children, Camille Orillo, 11, and Jake Jay Orillo, 13, were also wounded and taken to the same hospital, then later transferred to the Bislig City Hospital for further treatment.
The six were playing by the Hinipaan Falls in Sitio Hinipaan, Brgy. Poblacion around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, when one of them found the grenade, Gamba said.
The group brought the grenade 100 meters away from the falls and played with it, until it exploded, he said.
Police have yet to determine who left the grenade near the falls. (John Roson)
