Three people were killed while 18 others, including some children, were injured when the passenger buses they were riding collided against each other in Lupi, Camarines Sur, Wednesday night, police said.
Police identified the fatalities as Hazel Ivan Zelmar, 29, of Palo, Leyte; Francisca Belarmono, 67, of Las Pinas City; and Ramil Dela Cruz, 28, of Mandaluyong City.
The three, all passengers of the Ultrabus unit (HVP-508), were brought to the Sipocot District Hospital but expired along the way, PO2 Michael Despuig, desk officer at the Camarines Sur Provincial Police’s investigation section, said.
The injured passengers of Ultrabus and the Silverstar bus unit (DVX-961) are presently recuperating at the Bicol Medical Center. They include four children aged below 10.
The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m., while both buses were traversing the National Highway in Sitio Nauca, Brgy. Colacling.
“‘Yung Ultrabus galing Leyte papuntang Manila, ‘yung Silverstar naman galing Manila papuntang Visayas. ‘Yung Silverstar nag-overtake tapos nabangga niya ‘yung Ultrabus… kinain niya ‘yung left side ng Ultrabus,” Despuig said in a phone interview.
Police in Lupi have taken into custody Ultrabus driver Reynaldo Sanico, 40, of Maasin City, Southern Leyte, and Silverstar driver Mayjor Auro, 39, of San Pedro, Laguna.
“Pareho silang naka-custody, hold muna kasi under investigation pa sila,” Despuig said. (John Roson)
