Armed men shot to death a councilor of Sta Josefa, Agusand del Sur, while he was attending a fiesta celebration in the town Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Councilor Gregorio Plaza Sr. died in the hospital due to multiple bullet wounds on the body, Caraga regional police spokesman Supt. Martin Gamba said.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. while Plaza was attending the fiesta celebration in Brgy. Tapaz.

Plaza was talking with some friends near a sari-sari store when three men appeared and shot him on the different parts of the body, Gamba said.

The councilor was immediately taken to the Bunawan District Hospital and later transferred to the Montevista District Hospital, but expired few minutes later.

Police now have in their custody suspects Rolando Duyan, 30; Luisito Entic, 30, and a minor identified only as a certain “Paul,” all residents of Monkayo, Compostela Valley.

After the shooting, the three fled on a motorcycle but were cornered by pursuing policemen in Brgy. Kapatungan, Trento, Gamba said.

The suspects engaged members of the Sta. Josefa Police, Trento Police, Provincial Public Safety Company, and Agusan del Sur Criminal Investigation and Detection Team in a firefight but were eventually captured, according to the regional police spokesman.

Seized from Duyan were a caliber-.9mm pistol and one empty magazine while Entic yielded a homemade short firearm and five live caliber-5.56mm ammunition. (John Roson)
