Two soldiers were injured while several heavy equipment were damaged as New People’s Army (NPA) members attacked an airport construction site in Daraga, Albay, Friday night, a regional military spokesman said.

Major Angelo Guzman, Army 9th Infantry Division spokesman, identified the injured as Pfc. Gapayao and Pfc. Cornal of the 2nd Infantry Battalion.

Gapayao and Cornal were among 12 soldiers manning an Army detachment that serves as guard to the construction site in Brgy. Alobo.

Eight NPA members “harassed” the detachment around 9:35 p.m. while another group of rebels set ablaze two dump trucks, a backhoe, two articulated trucks, two payloaders, two road rollers, and a grader being used to build the international airport, Guzman said.

All the heavy equipment are owned by contractor Sunwest Corp. Some of these were only slightly burned but are still functional, Guzman said.

Rebels attacked the construction site because of Sunwest Corp.’s refusal to pay “revolutionary taxes,” according to the regional military spokesman. (John Roson)
