Twenty people, including several students, were injured when the bus they were riding fell into a ravine in Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, Saturday morning, police said.
Nineteen passengers, with ages ranging from 15 to 26, were brought to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center for treatment, Insp. Varie Villanobos, Don Salvador Benedicto Police chief said.
Most of the passengers are residents of Cebu City who were fetched from San Carlos City and headed for the Mambukal Resort in Murcia for a summer youth camp or “retreat.”
“Nineteen sila lahat na dinala sa ospital, walo ‘yung seriously injured pero safe na,” Villanobos said in a phone interview.
Aside from the 19, bus driver Francis Ledesma suffered slight injuries and is now detained at the Don Salvador Benedicto Police Station while undergoing investigation.
The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m., while Ledesma was driving the bus owned by the Don Bosco Technical Institute in Victorias City through the mountainous area of Purok Talus, Brgy. Igmaya-An.
“Descending ‘yung kalsada at paglapit niya sa blind curve ay nawalan daw ng preno kaya dumiretso sa bangin. Bangin yung gilid ng kalsadang ito, nahulog ‘yung bus sa bangin na more or less 15 meters ang lalim,” Villanobos said. (John Roson)
