A disgruntled man axed to death his Belgian employer before setting the latter’s establishment ablaze, in Danao, Bohol, police confirmed Wednesday.

Hendrik Florent Steegmans, 68, succumbed to hack wounds on the head while his body was “partially burned” as the suspect tried to burn down the Internet cafe where the foreigner was killed, Insp. Norman Nuez, Danao Police chief, said in a phone interview.

Steegmans’ body was found inside the Myrela Internet cafe in Brgy. Poblacion around 9:15 a.m. Monday, after authorities learned that the establishment was burning.

Steegmans co-owns the establishment with his Filipina wife Myriam.

Nuez said he and his men rushed to the scene as it was reported that a foreigner was killed in the fire, but found that residents had put out the blaze.

Suspect Ricardo Dawas, an employee of the Internet cafe, was still at the scene and even told police that a person was still inside, Nuez said.

“Nung dumating kami sa area, siya (Dawas) pa ang nagsabi na may tao sa loob nung shop na nasusunog. Nagkaroon kami ng hinala na may foul play so pinabantayan ko siya, then nung makita namin yung shorts niya na duguan, dinala na namin siya sa presinto at doon siya umamin na siya ang pumatay,” Nuez said.

Dawas told investigators that he got fed up by his employer’s constant scolding, according to the police official. (John Roson)
