Two suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members were killed as government troops clashed with the rebel group in Sugbongcogon, Misamis Oriental, Thursday afternoon, the military said.
The slain rebels have yet to be identified, Maj. Eugenio Osias, spokesman of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, said.
The clash occurred around 5:30 p.m., while members of the 58th Infantry Battalion were conducting operations in Brgy. Ampianga, he said.
The soldiers were responding to reports that rebels were extorting from residents when they encountered around 30 armed men, believed to be members of the NPA Guerilla Front 4B’s Sandatahang Platun Pangpropaganda 3, Osias said.
Aside from the slain rebels’ bodies, troops recovered from the scene a garand and carbine rifle, as well as 30 backpacks containing various belongings, he said. (John Roson)
