Suspected members of an extortion group detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at a restaurant in Isabela City, Basilan, Monday night, police said.
Supt. Allan Nazarro, Isabela City police chief, said the explosion occurred in front of the JJ Twins Food Center along Valderosa st. in the city proper around 7:45 p.m.
“Accordingly may dumaan na motor and may isang tao na bumaba, may iniwan na baggage and just a few seconds pumutok na,” Nazarro said in a phone interview.
No one was reported injured but the explosion damaged the restaurant’s accordion door, he said.
“Tinitingnan pa namin ‘yung anggulo ng extortion, kasi nakatanggap ng extortion letter ‘yung tindahan na ‘yun,” Nazarro said.
Police are still trying to determine what type of explosive was used in the IED, which is believed to have been triggered with a cellphone and reportedly had metal pellets and 1-inch concrete nails for shrapnels. (John Roson)
